The market town of Altrincham lies to the South of the River Mersey within the bounds of Greater Manchester and is home to just over 40,000 inhabitants. The town is part of Manchester's commuter belt due to its excellent transport links to its larger neighbour.
In recent years Altrincham's town centre and other retail areas have undergone major redevelopment work, particularly at the Stamford Shopping Centre which has been considerably expanded.
There is also a development project underway adjacent to the railway station that will create a host of new facilities including an ice rink, extreme sports centre and several new public spaces.
One of the town's most attractive spots is the award-winning Stamford Park, a large public park that has been open since the late nineteenth century, meaning it is listed as being of important historical significance, and which offers a range of sporting facilities.
